NPS Vatsalya Scheme 2026: Account Opening, Withdrawal Rules & Interest Rate

New Launch: Jan 2026

NPS VATSALYA SCHEME 2026
(Pension for Minors: Rules & Withdrawal)

(Secure your child’s future with ₹1,000/year)

⚡ Quick Answer: What is NPS Vatsalya?

NPS Vatsalya is a new pension scheme launched by the Govt of India for minors (below 18 years). Parents can open this account in the child’s name with a minimum contribution of just ₹1,000 per year.

✅ Key Feature: When the child turns 18, the account automatically converts into a regular NPS Tier-1 Account. The child can then continue investing for their own retirement.

⚠️ Withdrawal Trap: Unlike PPF, you CANNOT withdraw the full amount for education. You can only withdraw 25% of your own contributions (not the interest/returns) for education or illness, that too only after 3 years.

📢 Share with Parents:

PFRDA has released the final guidelines for NPS Vatsalya (Jan 2026). This scheme is designed to use the “Power of Compounding” by starting investment at a very young age. But is it better than PPF or Sukanya Samriddhi? Let’s decode the rules.

1. Eligibility & Account Opening

Any Indian citizen (including NRIs/OCIs) can open this account for their minor child.

Parameter Rule
Child’s Age 0 to 18 Years.
Guardian Account is operated by Parent/Guardian until child turns 18.
Min Contribution ₹1,000 per year (No maximum limit).
Documents Child’s Birth Certificate + Guardian’s KYC (Aadhaar/PAN).

2. Partial Withdrawal (Strict Rules)

You cannot treat this like a Savings Account. The money is locked for the long term.

🔒 When can you withdraw?

  • Lock-in: Minimum 3 years from account opening.
  • Purpose: Only for Education, Treatment of Specified Illnesses, or >75% Disability.
  • Limit: Max 25% of own contributions (excluding returns).
  • Frequency: Max 3 times during the entire tenure (until age 18).

3. What happens at Age 18?

🎂 The Transition:
On turning 18, the account automatically converts to a standard NPS Tier-1 account. The child (now adult) must complete fresh KYC within 3 months.

🚪 Can they close it?
Yes, but there’s a catch. If they exit at 18:

  • If corpus ≤ ₹2.5 Lakh: Full lump sum withdrawal allowed.
  • If corpus > ₹2.5 Lakh: 80% must be used to buy Annuity (Pension Plan), only 20% is given as cash.

❓ NPS Vatsalya Questions

Is there a tax benefit for parents?

Currently, there is no specific tax deduction mentioned for parents under Section 80C for contributing to NPS Vatsalya (unlike Sukanya Samriddhi or PPF). Clarification is awaited.

Can I open it for a girl child?

Yes. However, compare it with Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana (SSY) first. SSY offers EEE tax benefit and full withdrawal for education/marriage, which might be better for girl children.

🇮🇳 हिंदी में सारांश (Summary in Hindi)

बच्चों की पेंशन योजना (NPS Vatsalya)
