On the eve of the 77th Republic Day, the President of India has approved the conferment of service and gallantry medals to Police, Fire Service, Home Guards, and Civil Defence personnel. The awards recognize conspicuous acts of gallantry and distinguished service.

1. President’s Police Medal for Gallantry (PPMG): Highest police gallantry award.
2. Police Medal for Gallantry (PMG): For saving life and property, preventing crime.
3. President’s Police Medal (PPM): For Distinguished Service (Min 25 years).
4. Police Medal (PM): For Meritorious Service (Min 15 years).
Benefits for Awardees
Beyond the honor, these medals carry specific allowances for the awardees:
✔ Monthly Allowance (Gallantry)
- PPMG: ₹5,000 – ₹7,000 (Revised rates apply).
- PMG: ₹3,000 – ₹5,000.
- Tax Exemption: Pension attached to these awards is Tax-Free.
✔ Travel Concessions
- Railways: Free travel in First Class/AC 2-Tier for PPMG/PMG awardees (varies by rules).
- Air Travel: Discounted tickets on Air India (Subject to scheme).

Frequently Asked Questions
Can civilians get the Police Medal?
No. These medals are specifically for the uniformed services (Police, CAPF, Security Organizations). Civilians are eligible for Padma Awards (Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan, Padma Shri) announced on the same eve.
Is there a cash reward?
Yes. Many State Governments provide a one-time cash reward or land allotment to Gallantry Award winners belonging to their state. The Central Government provides the monthly monetary allowance attached to the medal.
