TA ON TRANSFER RULES 2026
(CTG, Packing & Car Transport)
(Got a Transfer Order? Here is what you can claim.)
⚡ Quick Answer: How much is the Grant?
Composite Transfer Grant (CTG): You are entitled to 80% of your Last Basic Pay. This is a lump-sum amount given to settle at the new station.
⚠️ Distance Rule: Full 80% is paid only if the distance between stations is more than 20 KMs. For less than 20 KMs (with residence change), it is 1/3rd of 80%.
A government transfer involves huge costs—shifting furniture, transporting vehicles, and setting up a new house. The “Transfer TA” is designed to reimburse these expenses. Since DA crossed 50%, the Packing Allowance rates have increased by 25%.
1. Composite Transfer Grant (CTG)
This is the cash component paid without producing bills. Note: For transfers to Island Territories (Andaman/Lakshadweep), the rate is 100% of Basic Pay.
Example: Basic Pay ₹50,000
Standard Rate (80%): ₹40,000
Condition: Distance > 20 KM.
Total Grant: ₹40,000
Example: Local Transfer
Short Distance (< 20 KM):
Calculation: 1/3rd of ₹40,000
Total Grant: ₹13,333
2. Transport of Personal Effects (Revised Rates)
This allowance covers the cost of a packer/mover truck. The rates below are Per KM. (Revised by 25% post-DA 50%).
| Pay Level | By Train (Weight Limit) | By Road (Rate Per KM)* |
|---|---|---|
| Level 6 & Above | 6,000 Kgs | ₹ 62.50 / km |
| Level 5 | 3,000 Kgs | ₹ 31.25 / km |
| Level 4 & Below | 1,500 Kgs | ₹ 18.75 / km |
3. Transportation of Conveyance (Car/Bike)
Can you transport your car? It depends on your Pay Level.
- Level 6 & Above: Eligible for 1 Motor Car OR 1 Motorcycle/Scooter.
- Level 5 & Below: Eligible for 1 Motorcycle/Scooter/Moped/Bicycle only.
- Reimbursement: Actual cost of transportation by Goods Train OR Road Mileage (if driven).
❓ Transfer TA Common Questions
Is Transfer Grant (CTG) taxable?
Transfer Allowance is generally exempt from tax to the extent it is actually incurred for the transfer purpose. However, the lump-sum CTG (without bills) may be scrutinized; advise consulting a CA.
Can I claim car transport if I drive it myself?
Yes. If you or a family member drives the car to the new station, you can claim Road Mileage at prescribed rates (e.g., ₹24/km + DA Hike).
